Humans’ or animals’ microbiome exists on all body surfaces, including the mouth, intestines, vagina, skin and eyes. Predominantly composed of bacteria, it also includes fungi, yeasts and viruses. On average, a person hosts over 30 trillion bacterial cells, most of which are located in the large intestine. Each individual has a unique microbiome with a specific combination of microorganisms.
According to scientific literature, “probiotics” are defined as “live microorganisms, which when administered in adequate amounts, confer a health benefit on the host”.
